Our Mission

Our goal at Mextiles (Pronounced: Mex-teal-ase) is to share these amazing artisan craft pieces with the world and help facilitate economic growth in these impoverished communities, by empowering young women entrepreneurs and introducing their craft to the world in a non-exploitive way. As a daughter of Chiapas, Mexico I want the world to know the beauty and culture of what my homeland has to offer. Join us in helping build a better Mexico, one village at a time.

Our Story, Our culture

Tapestry of Our People

Our designs are inspired by the traditional looming of the Tzoltzil (Pronounced: Sote-sil) culture of Chiapas. Each symbol or pattern represents a different object or story from our heritage. Most of the symbols are describing our nature because of how closely our people were tied to our land, forests, and mountains that surrounds us. Similar to Egyptian Hieroglyphs, our symbols are the tapestry of our people and keeps our culture alive today.

How do we create our products?

Advancement Through Cooperation

None of this would be possible without our local designers and weavers – Flor, Martha, Maria, Paulina, Patricia, Maria G, Ana, and our village communities of generational artisan loomers. These ladies have been weaving since they were kids, and continue the tradition of passing on these irreplaceable skills to the next generation.

Carrying on the Tradition

The technique used for our product is called back-strap loom weaving and is done entirely with hand tools and not by machines. This technique places a strap around the waist of the Loomer, the handspun threads laced to sticks that are tied up to create an incline between the Loomer and the fixture.

The threads are then interwoven and worked into the piece. The symbols you see are not embroidered but are woven directly into the piece, line by line. Most of our products take an entire day to finish, but some of our products can take up to 2-3 days to finish by hand. The fabric is then cut and stitched together BY HAND, creating a one-of-a-kind piece. You aren’t just buying something from a factory, you’re taking a piece of us and Mexico with you.
